My understanding is it was for understandable reasons. My company has a special way to make this one of a kind product. You do not get hired, learn that method, then sell it to the highest bidder. Was the idea. Basically to keep proprietary secrets. Sometimes like client lists and what they are being charged as well. It protected innovators.

Non-disclosure agreements are more useful in that regard and still legal

It's more an attempt to prevent corporations from pressuring employees into staying at jobs they hate because threatening financial ruin by keeping them out of the same field.
