One of Tarantulas' Most Revealing Lines

Post by Winter »

This is something that Chuck will doubtlessly point out when he gets around to reviewing the episode Tangled Web from Beast Wars' Second Season but one thing I've always found so interesting in that episode is a single line from Tarantulas that reveals so much about his character.

Spoilers for said episode so leave now and go check it out so you can see what I'm talking about.

So, in his episode Blackarachnia manages to break free of the physic link that Tarantulas created between them back in Coming of the Fuzors. She did this by crushing an Energon cube and threatening to blow herself up if Tarantulas didn't sever the link. As a consequence of the link Tarantulas share Blackarachnia's pain to which Blackarachnia tries to convince Tarantulas sever the link and save them both. And Tarantulas' response "NOOO!!!"

It's only when the threat of death is unavoidable or the pain becomes to much that Tarantulas severs the link. The fact that he was hesitant to sever the think despite the threat of pain and death says so much.

Tarantulas actually considered dying over relinquishing the power he had over Blackarachnia highlights that he is even more of a control freak then Maratron and will indulge in any little bit of power he can get his claws on. Even Maratron when even complete control of Cybertron still wasn't this controlling.

What does it say about Tarantulas that he is more controlling and power hungry than someone who literally removed the souls of almost every being on a entire planet and made it so they could never attack him?

Talking about this show with my friends one question we kept asking each other was 'if you were Megatron, which of the Predacons would you be most afraid of?' The answer was always Tarantulas.

What sets Tarantulas apart from the others is not just that he is treacherous or clever its the fact the he is bold enough to act on them. Tarantulas never hesitates to betray Megatron whenever his treachery offers him some kind of benefit. Granted, he does not act impulsively, unlike Terrorsaur, but the chance of failure is never enough to dissuade him.

If you look at the other Predacons they are not much of a threat to Megatron's role as leader because they lack one of these traits. Blackarachnia is just as clever as he is and spends as much time plotting against Megatron but she will never try anything unless she is completely certain she can get away with it. The only times she moved against Megatron was either when she knew she could not fail or else she was desperate. Terrorsaur was bold enough to seize power but was too incompetent to hold it, Waspinator and Quickstrike never really had the ambition to lead and Scorponok and Inferno were too loyal.

Rampage might be the only one equally as dangerous as Tarantulas but that is mostly because he can't be killed. He is not stupid but he's not a mastermind like Megatron or Tarantulas and he's just as likely to attack the Predacons as he is the Maximals.

True but one thing I find interesting about this is that Megatron has never been scared of Tarantulas and the main reason for that is that he is almost always one step ahead of him. Think about the Season 1 finale, Megatron was fully aware of Tarantulas' plan to leave the planet and had planned to kill him for doing so while also dealing with the Vok.

I'm also pretty sure he knew Tarantulas was a spy working with the Tripredacus Counsel given how he reacts. While Tarantulas is the most dangerous ally Megatron has he's always one step ahead of the spider which makes their dynamic so fun to watch.
