I suspect that all of the Boris supporters will now be rushing to vote for Penny Mordaunt out of spite. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

That is undoubtedly part of it. As noted a few comments back, this is absolutely a dead job. Whoever becomes PM has two years tops before Labour wins.

He was the only legitimate choice out of the three who were running in that he seems to be the closest the Tories have to a unity candidate. But as you say, its kind of a ''do you want to be kicked in one nut or two today?'' kind of scenario.
