Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
I mean, to be fair, the third season corruption fits fine into Magical Girl Starfleet (My favourite description of the nanoha franchise). It's a Section 31 plot tumour. Well, I see two problems with the comparison. Problem one is the role Section 31 fits into relative to the role of the corrupt con...

Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
While we're on the subject of Nanoha, when my best friend first introduced me to it in 2012, I was very disturbed how the TSAB functions kind of like... ONI on steroids. Chrono basically admits that in the TSAB system, they have no qualms with locking nine-year-old girls up for hundreds of years......

Re: Chuck's thoughts on Elfen Lied?
It is in no way inevitable. In fact I think it will never happen. Chuck specifically says on the donations page that he reserves the right to veto gory movies if he feels the blood and guts are too over the top or gratuitous; its safe to assume that rule applies to Anime as well. And even though he ...

Yeah, posting a ...

Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Also this is probably my last response to Formless One since by now I'm pretty sure we both have equally entrenched diametrically opposed opinions probably to each of us VERY valid. So using this thread for something that would become a sho- VIGOROUS DISCUSSION about things not relevant to the orig...

Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
I don't think many people liked Force given that it only lasted 30 issues. And when you see some of the utter arse that can get more issues than that in the manga industry that's pretty epic fail. Technically it was put on hiatus so Tsuzuki could have time for other projects (chapters of Force kept...

Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
In fact I haven't really liked anything in the franchise since Gears of Destiny, and while StrikerS had massive pacing issues and trying to cram content of a bigger season in 24 episodes while keeping all the inconsequential fluff, I still liked it's general idea. As I've discussed* on Spacebattles...

Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
The first movie is a solid replacement for the first season (Which can take a while to get into gear). Interestingly, the movies are...a little bit propaganda-ish, in a fun way. They're in-universe movies, so elements of them have been changed by people to show/reduce some aspects. Only the first t...

Re: Should old SciFi be judged by today's standards?
A lot of the time I'm not even sure how it becomes an all or nothing commitment to either condemning a piece or giving it a pass for cultural relativism. Who said either of those things? I'm merely arguing that works can and in fact are judged using modern standards. Being judged does not automatic...

Re: Should old SciFi be judged by today's standards?
I think if you look throughout history, you will find that propaganda has been huge from the very beginning of mass-communication. Even in Roman times, many of the great surviving works of art were intended to send a distinct message, like Trajan's column. And while I don't want to get dragged down ...
