Re: Is Rey a Mary Sue?

Yes ... and no. A Mary Sue is not just a "super powerful character with no flaws", it's a device within fan-fiction. A new character comes onto the scene and the plot begins to revolve around them. The biggest tell that someone doesn't know what a Mary Sue is, is if they tell you that a Mary Sue "ca...

Re: Which Trek creator (writer, producer, etc) do you think was weakest on continuity world-building?

Also, it's my understanding that W&T are the ones who kept spelling it "pah" instead of "pagh", which kinda grinds my gears as well. Yes, that does make them come across as quite flippant. I don't doubt that he came up with the idea (which, like I said, wasn't necessarily a bad idea), but W&T did t...

Re: Which Trek creator (writer, producer, etc) do you think was weakest on continuity world-building?

Their fingerprints are all over the Pah-Wraith stuff, which to me ruined the show. They were also behind Section 31, which wasn't a bad idea per se but which was executed hideously poorly IMO. I definitely agree that the Pah-Wraith nonsense hurt the show immeasurably but how much of that was Weddle...

Re: Complete Voyager and First Contact/Insurrection Rewrite Fanfiction

Okay, so how about Tuvok and Neelix are held by "insert rival faction here" on x ship because the pattern buffer technobabble and the Voth want to blow up x ship. The aliens on x tell Voyager that they'll release Tvuok and Neelix if Voyager help them, otherwise they'll make sure they go down with th...

Yes but what to the Voth want? Are you asking for help contriving the dilemma or do you already know how to set it up?

Re: Which Trek creator (writer, producer, etc) do you think was weakest on continuity world-building?

"Blood and Fire" was David Gerrold's script, which was meant to introduce a gay couple, in line with the promise Roddenberry had made to that effect. Berman refused to run it.

Re: Most prophetic movie of the 1990s?

I may have mentioned it elsewhere but it is the height of irony that Verhoeven thought that the book was fascist propaganda (it isn't) and, in turn, the press thought his film was fascist propaganda (it wasn't). Nothing brings out the bare-faced stupidity of critics (both of the book and the film) t...

I'm not following. What ethical dilemma? If you can keep all three of them alive, then you've side-stepped the dilemma.

I don't find the dilemma in "Tuvix" compelling because it's contrived.

Re: Which Trek creator (writer, producer, etc) do you think was weakest on continuity world-building?

Yes, Rick Berman was bad for Star Trek. I think his only defence was his alleged loyalty to Roddenberry, but I think his rejection of "Blood and Fire" puts paid to that, since he was basically responsible for making a liar out of Gene. However, if you look at the stuff he wrote with Michael Piller v...

Re: Complete Voyager and First Contact/Insurrection Rewrite Fanfiction

What if they beamed Tuvok and Neelix to their ship previously (or Tuvok and Neelix once beamed aboard of their own accord)? So they could materialise them independently, if they still had their "pattern" or whatever. That would involve a bit of memory loss, though, a la "Lonely Among Us" (although t...
