Re: California voted to change its constitution

I suspect this is aimed at the State University System. And I can understand the necessity, even if the optics are less than optimal. Translation: It sounds bad, but we're only really planning on discriminating against whites and males, so it's okay. The ones who are really being actively discrimin...

Re: Coronavirus - the new pandemic

Rightly or wrongly, the perceived credibility of certain public health experts is going to take a hit, to the point that if/when a second wave comes, I don't know that a lockdown will be possible. To be honest, I think some medical professional screwed up by jumping in with these protests with both ...

Re: Star Trek Discovery: The Trouble With Edward

Exhibit A for anyone who wants to argue that Star Trek writers have no idea what a leader is supposed to actually do. What makes it worse is that it seems as if the audience is expected to take her side. I mean, Chuck's right that comedy is subjective, but there's a difference between dark humor and...

Re: Another day, another police beating in America

Minneapolis is not the first city to disband it's police department. It has gone well. And I really doubt it'll be the last. I'm gonna avoid a twitter style dunking, but that thing that totally went really well hasn't, at this point in time, actually happened. No surprise it went exactly the way yo...

Re: Another day, another police beating in America

Do we really need the twitter-style outing and shaming of posters? Emotional blackmailing and ad hominems might be great for retweets but it seems needlessly performative (not to mention lacking nuance) for a thread with maybe a dozen posters in it.

Re: Lord of the Flies

I'm reading this for the first time right now. I was familiar with the basic story, but what surprises me is that it really is just a young adult adventure yarn in some ways (so far). There's definitely the sense that you're dealing with archetypes, symbolism, and allegory, but unlike something like...

Re: RedLetterMedia - Star Trek Picard

The Plinkett persona adds a veneer of authority somehow. Watching Re:view or Half in the Bag, they come across as regular guys with varying opinions and tastes on film. Granted they have seen and know a lot more about movies than most people, but you can take or leave their recommendations without ...

Re: What's the last book you've read?

Recently read The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe, the first volume of The Book of the New Sun. Pretty interesting and unique sci-fi/fantasy, and very dense. Also read I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.

Re: TOS - Metamorphosis

Kind of a weird episode where you can make a decent case for it being either pretty poor or really good depending on which elements you emphasize. I fall somewhere in the middle. Some nice ideas, a good script, but fairly weak in both the set-up and resolution of Cochrane's story. In some ways this ...
