One common misconception is that all props are 'fakes'. A prop is simply an object used to assist with acting a role - it can be a mere imitation, or the genuine article. What matters is how the object is used.

So a 'prop' gun can be a model, a real gun with the inner workings disabled, or fully functional.

Kind of like how Christian Bale yelled at that one crew member. On one hand he's just using his "prop" of excitement for the movie. On the other hand it can still have serious repercussions when misused.
