They are. But your agency is very limited. You obviously do everything you can to exert your will on the process...a great deal more than most people in this country do, I might add. But recognize when you've done what you can, and be content. The world is so much bigger than you, and the internet is only too happy to stream every disaster across its vast surface through your phone and into your mind. You cannot take its weight on your shoulders, no matter how much you want to help. It will only break you, doing no good to anyone in the process.
And yes, that includes skipping my article if you think that's best for your mental health. Knowledge is great, but sanity is better.
