Which starts to get a bit sideeyed the more the restrictions exist.

Is it unusual for meeting sites in general to ban guns?

Not at all but because the NRA's position that trained gun users increase safety and that they should be in schools at the hands of teachers as well as other public places makes the fact these venues are chosen versus ones which does look like hypocrisy. There are many private locations which could be used for them after all that would allow gun carrying.

Oy, I hate wading into News, but I had to correct a few things:

1. The NRA isn't banning guns at its convention. The Secret Service is banning guns from Pence's speech.
2. People carry guns at the NRA convention and at SHOT show. Attendees have a better safety record than the Capitol police.
3. Guns are already banned at schools as per the Gun-Free Schools Act. Shockingly, school shooters seem to ignore that law.
4. Nobody removes firing pins from the guns people lawfully carry into SHOT Show. The firing pins are removed from the DEMO guns at shot show, because people at a gun convention will necessarily point them into a crowd and pull the trigger; rendering it nonfunctional is a necessary safety precaution if you're expected to handle the merchandise.
5. Removing a firing pin requires specialized tools. It is not something that is even remotely feasible to do to convention attendees even if you wanted to. You can't just pull a lever and remove the firing pin.

First, the part about removing firing pins exactly matches what I said above:
There will, of course, be plenty of weapons in evidence at the hundreds of display booths, but for convention security the firing pins must be removed.
Next, note the correction at the bottom of the page:
Correction: April 10, 2015
An editorial on Friday about the National Rifle Association’s convention incorrectly described the rules for carrying concealed firearms at the event. Carrying is prohibited at one of the main convention venues, not all of them
The one venue being Pence's speech, and the central point of the piece.
