On one hand, it's an uplifting story of how somebody revived a dying town and solved two problems to mutual benefit. On the other, it's a good example of "No good deed goes unpunished."
"Believe me, there’s nothing so terrible that someone won’t support it."

They say he was officially arrested for corruption, but if I know anything about Italy it's that the real criminals never actually get arrested unless they become Prime Minister and have bunga-bunga parties with underage Moroccan prostitutes.

Yeah, this is a political hit job by the League and their cronies in the government. Keep in mind, the mayor of what's basically the next town over is a neo-fascist dirtbag who blamed illegal immigration for a notorious incident of fascist goon squads and Mafia gangs beating up and murdering immigrants, and that dirtbag mayor's part of the League party that's a main part of the current ruling right-wing block.

It's also representative of a deeper problem in Italian society and politics, which is that corruption is endemic at or above the level it is in Mexico. Essentially, the government is SO dirty and so used to BEING dirty that any attempts to punish corrupt officials will only be perverted and used to punish political rivals of important people and those who try to fix the mess.
