Democrats refuse to acknowledge this, and keep making claims that crossings are at a low point (claims which mostly rely on data from 2017, when they were low, and ignore the current situation).

The current Republican president is under investigation for conspiring with a foreign power to undermine American democracy, and the sitting Senate Majority leader ensured that the American public would not be privy to that fact prior to the election. We have all the best arable land in the hemisphere, we've got a strong economy, our government is stagnant but functional, our organized crime is a nuisance rather than a mortal threat, and we have a functional social safety net.

You come to America, you can at least survive above the poverty line, even if you're hated and exploited. In Central America, you can't even get that as a poor or especially mostly-indigenous person (the colonial-era caste system is dying a slow, miserable death).
