Sanders goes after Bezos personally with Tax Plan

Post by BridgeConsoleMasher »

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/24/jeff-bezos-would-pay-9-billion-a-year-in-taxes-under-sanders-plan.html

Sanders went so far to say that Bezos shouldn't exist, and said that he'd settle for $9 billion. Sounds like a lot, but if it's apparently at the expense of one's own life then I wouldn't blame Bezos for going through with it. I certainly wouldn't vote for Sanders if I was him though.

All together, Sander's tax plan would get 4.25 trillion dollars in 10 years while Warren's would get 2.6. Really I'm not sure why anybody would want to vote for Warren if it was the tax revenue they were concerned with, as 1.65 trillion dollars is a big tradeoff.

I can't help but think that we're arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, here. Even if the Democrats somehow retake the Senate, neither of these plans is going to go anywhere. The Blue Dogs may be gone, but there are still way too many centrist Democratic senators to have this happen.

to an extent, but presidents do set the tone of their party, and refusing to go directly after accumulated wealth and the undue political and social influence it enables is even now becoming pretty poisonous to Democrats, and putting Warren or Sanders in the white house would accelerate that trend quite a bit. There's only so far a particular senator/representative can be out of line with their party's broad preferences before they stop having a job.

Edit: to be clear, there's almost certainly no chance of either of these plans becoming actual legislation, but that's true of any presidential plan, they need to be thought of as outlines and goals, not actual "elect me and this happens" outcomes.

Both tax plans seem very anti-establishment and something that won't fly in US because of it. If it doesn't benefit rich while being against regular Americans it's sure to meet resistance that kills it.

That's Sanders' whole approach. Stick his nose at the system even though he is part of that system.
