I have no particular love for the religious right part of the GOP. For all the GOP's talk of small government, they've shown that they really just want to control other aspects of our private lives, and even a few of the same as the Democrats if for different reasons. Also very frustrating for a secularist. They are somewhat useful for gun rights and a few other things, but that's about it. Actually one of the few positives I was hoping to get out of Trump was concealed carry reciprocity in all 50 states, and an end to the red tape that was preventing the return of a few thousand M1 Garands that had been sold or lend-leased overseas.

Libertarians tend to exist on something of a spectrum, with some leaning more right or left, or some more centrist like myself who lean right on some issues and left on others. And while some paradoxically worship law enforcement and the military, others are very distrustful (instruments of the state, after all). I do not blindly worship, but nor do I don tin foil hat or assume the worst. I just don't take their word for anything is all. I'm one of those who thinks little brother should be able to watch back.

Awesome! So you have more sense than my young Libertarian AnCap friend. And yeah, GOP just wants to control our private lives in other ways. Namely, regulate sex. Dirty, dirty sex. With, like, actual boobs and stuff.

Political stalemates, the only hope for civilized people to endure a decent life for just a few more years. It's crazy that this status quo during which nothing happens, be that good or bad, is something to be happy about. O tempora, o mores.

Do they want to do that right now despite some prostitution crusading about backpage.com?

So much for the "This is the most important election of our time!" rhetoric. Voters were more motivated than in some other recent midterms, but it falls in line with long-term trends. Not a shock. The biggest surprise to me was the number of seats that Republicans gained/are likely to gain in the Senate.

I could see Trump liking this outcome- he has a big enough majority in the Senate to protect him from any controversy and push through any nominees he might have, but he also has something convenient to blame if things go badly and no legislation gets through.

I'd love to see some bipartisan legislation go through, but I'm afraid that this stalemate is just going to leave more time for twitter, investigations, etc. This lays the groundwork for the real landmark election in 2020.

Probably not much is going to happen because both sides are convinced that they can't compromise on anything.

Not much will happen legislatively. But a whole lot is going to happen.

Every house committee just changed hands, and with that comes investigation and subpoena power. Democrats were just given one hell of a fishing licence. Trump and his associates had better be squeaky clean - which, given recent history, seems unlikely.

Well, the dominant party always tends to lose in the midterms. Look at 2010.

Is there any subject the two agree on anymore? The two can't agree on giving free medicine to the poor.

And Yukaphile is wrong about the Republicans.

Their Nevada Congressman was a literal "sells sex for money" pimp. He just happened to die before he was elected.
