A marxist peril about capitalist redistribution? One involving people spending out of sheer benevolence?

More like "rich people will shell out millions for the sacred cultural treasures of some groups, but not others."
"Believe me, there’s nothing so terrible that someone won’t support it."

Looking at the article again, it seems to be more about awareness to the trees, which is fine enough. Stop the government from bulldozing simple, but it doesn't really have anything to do with condemning the tributary to Paris.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Sun Apr 21, 2019 3:57 am More like "rich people will shell out millions for the sacred cultural treasures of some groups, but not others."
And yes, there's nothing wrong with people spending their own money on something they personally care about instead of something they don't care about. And it's not something that costs $800 million to prevent.

Really though for comparison, the lapse of either is bad no matter what you think either way, but there's nothing really peculiar about the trees, at least as far as argument sake comparing initiatives for each situation.
Even if you balance out the cost of preventing such lapses, it's not like the material nature of the cathedral serves to disqualify it. As far as memento, it's a figure of our own manifestation and conception, etc... It's as much symbolic as it is material, if that makes any sense.
As far as who's paying how much, the companies I don't think should be charged with not being dedicated philanthropists in more indiscriminate manner. And really there would never be a legal provision to say "no you can't give that much money to help this," or even "sorry, but we're going to take that and divide it by all the other millions of problems going on in the world. Thank you for donating so much to where we deem necessary after the public spectacle that was a world-famous catholic reflection of the people native (and probably indigenous) to the country was engulfed in extravagant robust flames in front of the world's eyes."
