I'm actually of the mind that tonight was a victory for the GOP. Or at least, the lesser of two losing positions. It's never fun to lose a Senate seat, but putting Moore in the Senate would have been a disaster for the Republicans. It would be like having ANOTHER Trump to run around carrying water for.

That said, it's also a huge win for the Democrats. The Senate suddenly looks a lot more attainable in 2018.

It is a surprising result in Alabama. Even after the allegations surfaced against him, it seemed as though Moore would win. A Democrat winning a senate seat from Alabama seemed completely unthinkable. The mood out there on both sides seems pretty hostile to Steve Bannon who they're blaming as largely responsible for this defeat. Perhaps it will discredit him politically, similar to how Karl Rove was discredited in the aftermath of Romney's defeat in 2012...

I disagree. This has seriously impacted their ability to have any accomplishments the next year, and will be a major blow to party morale. Alabama is the most conservative state in the country and they just lost there, imagine how the democratic party would feel if they'd just lost New York.

I don't have to imagine. I'm old enough to remember when the Democrats lost TED KENNEDY'S seat to a Republican.

But yes, the short term hit will be quite palpable. That said, I still think it will pale next to having Moore in the Senate. The man is a walking, talking PR nightmare with no off switch. They already have one of those. The last thing they need is another.

Moore is almost certainly going to win - His opponent is so milk-toast, unmemorable and policy weak - a clear sign the democrats continue to learn nothing from repeated failures. Moore will likely win because the corporate democrats simply don't have the right policies and the messaging that comes out of them in order to compete.

It's an embarrassing train-wreck to constantly lose over and over again in the exact same way....

It's as I say if a Democratic Socialist like Lee Carter can win in VIRGINIA - something that that the Democrats have repeatedly called impossible in the most economically conservative states in the union. They can win just about anywhere it would at least be an actual race.

The Democratic party left him high and dry he was up against a fundraising juggernaut in Jackson Miller - NOBODY on K-street thought he could win and he pulled off a NINE POINT VICTORY it was not even CLOSE not even remotely. We made the republicans look like FOOLS and waving DSA flags in their faces and belching out 'Solidarity Forever' like we don't care whose watching.

I wish the democrats were like that I really do. Someone like Carter could bring together a coalition of populists to really give Moore a run for him money and it's really sad there isn't one.

Even with this loss, I have a feeling Moore will continue to be an albatross around the RNC's neck, especially through 2018. After all, the RNC did eventually back Moore, especially after Trump came out in support of him. Which Trump is, once again, trying to distance himself from since he lost, just as he did with Strange and Gillespie after their losses.

Hey I'm as surprised as anyone - it was still uncomfortably close and I still don't think Jones won as much as Moore Lost. I stand by everything I said there. you couldn't construct an easier opponent or loathsome human being and he still just barely lost.

Still I dunno I don't feel like there was anything accomplished here. was it really anything but a vague moral victory?

Good to know that the Democrats have become the moralist party. You may find power in it for a time, but just ask the Evangelists how that worked out for them.

Buddy, in this day and age, I will take my victories where I can find them. I would agree it's more about Moore losing, but I'm deliriously relieved to see this slavery-loving teen-fondler get SOME kind of consequences.
