I'm a bit confused. I find it hard to believe, that previous statements by the police and the opening of the charges was completely unfounded in a case that is positioned like this.

For a lot of Americans the idea the Chicago police assuming a hate crime reported by a black gay man had to be a hoax is unsurprising....because the Chicago police are racist and homophobic as fuck.

But just starting with the fact their two primary witnesses were arrested for 48 hours without a lawyer means that the case would have been thrown out by any decent judge.

Because, you know, that's ''illegal.''

Also, those two were given a deal where they'd get no jail time if they rolled on their acquaintance. Truthfully or not.

No suspiciousness whatsoever.

In my opinion its simple - Smollett was attacked, and the Chicago PD coerced a confession out of two black men connected to him that he faked it (because of systemic racism within Chicago PD, which is hardly a surprise). When something went wrong with the case they dropped charges and closed things off to spare their asses from a public reaming (because people like the police chief and Fox news have been saying how awful it is that Smollett "lied")

CHICAGO — Chicago's police union is calling for a federal investigation into the Cook County State's Attorney's actions in the Jussie Smollett case.

Three days after Smollett claimed he was attacked, Kim Foxx asked Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson to turn the case over to the FBI.

The request came after Foxx exchanged text messages and emails with relatives and a supporter of Smollett, who said they were worried about leaks in the investigation.

Foxx later recused herself from the case.

The FOP wants federal investigators to determine whether Foxx broke the law.

Except it's the prosecutor that dropped this, while the police are screaming to high heaven (even now) that he should be charged.

You don't need to beat a confession out of a man. It's perfectly legal to say, "We'll send you to prison for 30 years unless you finger this guy."

But in an interview Tuesday afternoon, First Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Magats, who took charge of the case after State’s Attorney Kim Foxx stepped aside because of a conflict of interest, said the office reached a deal with the defense behind the scenes in recent weeks that prosecutors would drop the charges if Smollett performed community service and forfeited his $100,000 bond.

Yeah, he did absolutely nothing wrong, so he's going to donate $100,000 to the court. That's the reaction any of us would have to be being falsely accused, I'm sure.

Because the kind of people who think that intimidating witnesses into compliance and gathering evidence illegally are not the kind of people who have to deal with this bullshit in court? Even from the existing released data like how they obtained their "confessions" there's a bunch of illegal behavior. No sane prosecutor would have pursued this and the CPD are acting like they did nothing wrong.

As for forfeiting 100K.

That depends.

If I think that a prolonged investigation is going to end up making me look very bad/stupid, and I'm a man of Mr. Smollett's means, then sure. Bite the bullet, pay the fine, try to move on.

But if I've just been framed by a bunch of racist, homophobic cops for staging a hate crime against myself, then fuck no, I'm not giving anyone anything. Let's go to court. Bring everything out into the light. It'll make my eventual civil case against the city all the easier, when they pay me millions of dollars for destroying my good name.

But I guess I'm just an idealist.
