We weren't some different species 70 or 100 years ago. Mostly we've had a few minor cultural advances, some progress, but overall, it's our technology base that has made us "seem" to have grown more than we really have. We're still the same people we were 10,000 years ago.

Yes, there's been some improvements, but overall, if you took a specific kind of human from 70 years ago, and dumped him into today's world, while there'd be a bit of a culture shock, overall, he'd adapt well. We haven't advanced that far as we like to pretend we have. I still hear news reports from those times, read books from that era, and I can tell you, while there have been a few minor changes, mostly in institutions, overall, people remain the same as they were during those times. And your argument is proven false anyway. Even in those countries where gay people can get married (and there's many more where they can't!), nevertheless, they still face push-back from traditionalists wanting marriage to be sacred and holy, as "the good book says," between man and woman, not for cruel or evil reasons, but simply out of... whatever drives them. And gender identity is still a very hard thing for us to grasp, despite the constant empowerment of the LGBT community. I've also heard of famous Hollywood starlets who in the 1950s had gay friends, and never told them on them, because they'd get fired, so there you go. Human beings have changed, yes, but overall, we remain the same people we were then. Really, please don't "otherize" people from 70 or 100 years ago. Cultural relativism is not that insurmountable. We should be attempting to look to the things that are timeless, transcend the ever-present generational gap, and unite or speak to us as a people. Hell, they had an attempt to get women recognized as equals in the 19th century. Yes, during a time when we still kept slaves!
