If you live in a rural area, cars are a necessity, not a luxury. If you live in, say, Philadelphia, cars are an extra. Suburbs it depends on the type of neighborhood.
I'm not as concerned about possible hour and job cuts because underemployment is a larger mass threat to economic survival of the common man than unemployment.
