This is for topical issues effecting our fair world... you can quit snickering anytime. Personally I doubt it's a strategic decision at all. The party leaders like McConnell are purely mercenary with no actual principles (even by lifelong politician standards), but the people they put on the court are True Believers who were raised to see voting straight Republican for the purpose of getting a conservative majority for this exact reason as the Most Important Thing. There was probably no way to stop them.
The great irony being abortion was promoted by Phyllis Schlafly as a religious issue in order to try to increase support for segregating schools again. If that doesn't make sense, understand abortion was considered a "weird Catholic issue" in the 1960s and they believed any judge who would be willing to ignore precedent there would be willing to ignore precedent to overturn desegregation.
Then it became an actual issue.
Well they can't really use school segregation as a motivator anymore, they won that one decades ago by redrawing the districts until they were effectively segregated again.
Fun fact, Schlafly's huge success at making the world worse for women and organizing against things like the Equal Rights Amendment was a major inspiration for The Handmaid's Tale. Serena Joy especially is basically just a stand-in.

One of the dumb statements I have heard when it came to abortion was that conservatives won't use it, but liberals would. So liberals are killing future voters and liberals should be against abortion because of that.
That popped in my head today when I read about McConnell's statement it could be a nationwide ban.
If they can overturn this, then they can overturn other laws the conservatives don't like.
They fucking did it. And Thomas' consenting opinion said they're coming for contaception, gay rights, and gay marriage next. He seems to think interracial marriage is safe, which is just adorable.
