Well, the Vice-President must be expected to be the President in case, huh? In that case, stop with the tokenism and just let her take the reins.

Well, if all one cared about was having a woman in the office, we could have had a token female Vice-President way back in 2008. Personally I'm not complaining that didn't happen, because I care more about the person than what they were born as. Hell, I repeatedly voted for a female Senator, but not because she was a woman. I'm actually rather disappointed she lost on Tuesday, because she was consistently centrist and stood up for individual rights. But this election my state had to be all "Hurr-durr Republican!" and elected some crook instead.

As I said, my thinking is different for a female Vice-President, because she's expected to be President if he resigns or dies, huh? Then why not skip him and go right to her? Because we've never had a female President before and that pisses me off. And I don't think we're likely to get one except under those circumstances. A female Vice-President that succeeds the man. That's piggybacking off men. And I HATE that.

Yukaphile wrote: Thu Nov 08, 2018 4:43 pm Well, I sadly think we can expect a token female Vice-President in 2020, especially if it's a female candidate that loses to the more popular guy, and that bugs me because if she's qualified enough to be Vice-President, then she deserves the top job, over the man, because we've never had a female President before, and little girls and women deserve to be empowered that way for the first time in 200 years. But it's not going to happen. I'm probably going to have to wait till 2028 or beyond before we see a legitimately elected female President, chosen by the masses, rather than piggybacking on a man. That's pathetic.

That was the 1990s. And those times are never coming again.

We've had two female prime ministers in Britain. Our first was such a controversial figure that people openly cheered when when she died to the point that it made the national news (not a joke). And our second is currently on the brink of being kicked out of office by her own party entirely due to her own poor decisions mostly regarding Brexit, the UK falling down around her and the election that she called early.

Men do not have the monopoly on crap leadership, and anyone who thinks that the country will improve solely by ticking a diversity box is kidding themselves.

I don't pretend women can make better leaders. But at least you guys have actually done it. Germany has done it. We've never had a female President. Ever. People keep harping on about how "it shouldn't be about her gender, but her qualifications." Then why have we never had one? There are numerous qualified women out there. Maybe it's what George Carlin said. Maybe it's not politicians who suck. Maybe it's something else. Like... the public. "The public sucks, fuck hope."

I don't think America is particularly backwards when it comes to electing females. Sure, we haven't had a female President yet, but we also don't have a parliamentary system, the way that most European countries do. Merkel does not run for her role. Her party runs, and if it wins, then she gets the office as the head of her party. Nancy Pelosi has used the same trick to become Speaker several times.

Whether or not a parliamentary system is superior to FPTP is up for debate. Both systems have strengths and weaknesses.
This is notably the time in America with the most female Congressman.

While sexism played a role undoubtedly, Hillary was also a polarizing figure to a large segment of the public on the Left's side. The Democrats really did take a very large segment of their own base for granted in assuming they liked her.

A lot of them were also gullible to fall for twenty years of lies. In the nineties, they said she was too liberal. Nowadays, it was too conservative. So yeah. It's not politicians. "The public sucks, fuck hope." George Carlin is timeless. Probably will be in 2781. Assuming humans survive that long.
