While I feel potential gravitas in the procedures occurring at the Academy over the incident, the more concerning aspect for me is the specific polarization over support or outspoken condemnation for Smith specifically over the incident. I mean the incident itself is kind of minor in the grand scheme of things, and I found it rather appreciable that things weren't escalated to the level of escorting him out; at least as far as how it was handled in the moment.

Outright condemnation for Smith in general just comes off kind of banal for principles of non-violence, while unbridled support kind of neglects Chris Rock's position a bit, as much as he might have crossed the line.

Clearspira, did you know about John Wayne and were you as upset about him?

Will Smith resigns from the Academy.

Gotta do some extra mental gymnastics to think it was staged now.

That's disgusting. He ought to have been thrown out of the Academy long before he had any chance to resign.

Adrian Brody straight-up sexually assaulted Halle Berry when he won and they didn't kick him out. Don't know why you'd expect more of a reaction for a relatively minor thing like a slap.

"Berry, who had won her Oscar the year before for Monster’s Ball, said that because she knew the feeling of being out of your body when hit by total surprise, “I just fucking went with it.” "

It would have been difficult, I think, to kick him out for an action Berry cooperated with.

So in your mind the action is irrelevant, only how the target reacted? So if Rock had laughed it off the slap would be ok to you?
