I wear a mask on the rare occasions I'm forced outside, I honor the quarantine, I practice social distancing. And you don't even know what my beliefs are. It was just a figure of expression, and while I believe in an abstract concept of "God," it is less what we think of it and a universal force connecting us all, like electromagnetism. A universal consciousness. Does that mean we shouldn't try to clean up our own act ourselves? Of course not. But I'm doing my part.
It is a terrible figure of speech, because at best, it's a completely empty gesture and at worst, it's an open and active act of mockery and contempt.
How do you see that? I'm doing my part, but do you really a low-income blue-collar worker to be able to contribute in any meaningful way past honoring social distancing and quarantine? I would contend your assertion there, however. It was not meant as mockery and contempt, for I do, in fact, feel very badly for the people of New York. You hear the news stories where they head to other states, and are treated as pariah. And it's not right, because it's human nature to fear what they could be bringing to other places, but they might not be, and you can feel the isolation and suffering the people are going through. It drips into their words in interviews. I don't defend it. My heart sincerely goes out to them, and you seemed to be the one who spun this into some kind of anti-religious spiel when the death toll has surpassed 9/11. It's just brutal and though I have a friend who lives in the New Jersey area I don't live in New York personally, so all I can do is hope they recover in short order.

Captain Crimson wrote: Fri May 01, 2020 9:18 pmEDIT: Many of those victims could be religious themselves, whether christian or muslim or something in between. Did you ever consider that? I don't think it is dishonoring them when my intent is to offer support to the families and hope the victims have their rest. Your retort is not logical. Though if you feel outrage against the injustice out there, believe me, I could understand that. You hear the stories all the time about people who leave the church because they grew to hate God for never helping out. Fair enough. But in this context, I've never been a member of the church. I just want the best for the victims.
And did you consider the atheists, the hindus, the taoists, the shintoists, the various american pagan believes and so on? No, you did not and you even make it a point in your post, which really shows how little thought you put behind your words in the first place, made even worse by your dismissive attitute of "whether christian or muslim or something in between".

If you have nothing to say and can only offer empty words, then you better not open your mouth at all, because all you are doing is doing something to make yourself feel better and rubbing it in everyone's face, while wasting everyone's time on top of it.
Yes, I am including all those other groups. The fact I did not list them... honestly, seems as if you're trying to paint an agenda onto me, when I figure it goes without saying. Your contention that I didn't think this through is perhaps a valid one, though if I had known that somebody here would challenge what to me was on the surface a message of support for the New York, and not take it at face value, then I most certainly would have clarified beforehand.

I am NOT trying to make myself feel better. Wasting everyone's time, that might also be a valid criticism, but as I've said prior, I'm just a small cog in the machine. Tides swell, we're pushed back and forth, and as individuals, we don't really achieve anything meaningful for society in the long run. But all I can do is hope and pray, even if not literally, for a better tomorrow. Isn't that what any of us can do? I know the people of New York can overcome this and I just hope it's sooner rather than later. If my words offended you that badly, however, then I think perhaps on this topic I will just cut off the conversation here, and offer an apology if you feel that I misspoke.

Shutting up now.

So, now, any federal prison sentence, regardless of length, is functionally the death penalty.

Anyone wanna pin this on incompetence vs malice, or should we just split the difference?

I can't believe I'm telling you this, of all people, but dude? Chill.

The reason "thoughts and prayers" has become so hated and insulting is because it is a refrain from members of congress, and other powerful public figures. It's insulting when it comes from people who could create real, meaningful change, in fact have a professional obligation to do so, and choose instead to sit around on their piles of money and say "thoughts and prayers" for the optics.

This guy is a class peer, not a politician sitting on enough unspent net worth to fix flint's water supply and buy a fleet of yachts.

Breaking news from France: They have been retesting pneumonia patients from back in December and have found conclusive evidence that covid was in France on the 27th.

This is big. It means that all of the attempts made to isolate known cases back in January was essentially a waste of time because it was already in the general Europe population.

Providing a source...

https://www.sciencealert.com/genetic-investigation-reveals-covid-19-was-circulating-in-europe-before-cases-were-reported

...because why wouldn't you provide a source in the first place?

Anyways, attempts of isolation would and still did help with slowing down further spread.

I don't think too much attention will be placed on misplaced resources.

More considerate than I would be on a phone.

There have been antibody tests showing a lot more exposure than previously thought, too... But not everyone accepts those, and they would indicate a far lower mortality than seen in cases like that cruise ship.

Even the experts are still trying to figure this one out.
