Yes, but the republicans here don't want people to vote, because if they did that, they would stop winning.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 11:03 pmYou've just described the UK exactly.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 8:38 pm https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-p ... ks-1996517
"And we are gonna look at elections. We want to have paper ballots, one day voting, voter ID, and proof of citizenship."
Of course, we are a lot smaller so the logistics for you are 100X greater, but our system does work pretty well. Voter fraud is typically unheard of. The paper ballots system is especially useful because it gets around the problem that you guys have of there not being enough places to vote in certain marginalised areas. Do you know what happens here if there are too few polling stations to go around? Some bloke parks up his car on the side of the road and uses that instead. I'm not joking:

Allow me to translate.
One day voting: make it harder for disabled people and people who can't get time off work to vote
Voter ID: Make it harder for poor people to vote
Proof of citizenship: make it easier for cops and militia members to harass and intimate black and brown people

Heck, despite bosses not being allow to fire someone for taking time off to vote, nothing stopping them for doing that and just claim they were fire for something unrelated to the voting.
Re: Donald Trump Reloaded!
My job actually gave us four hours paid time off to vote. Either use it in the morning or the afternoon. I took the afternoon. My vote was quick and painless. But I live in NJ.
I would be more concerned about the flip states than my state.

I got nothing to say here.

Well, I agree in theory. In theory, Communism works! Let's compare something that's easy to quantify, Voter ID.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 11:03 pmYou've just described the UK exactly.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 8:38 pm https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-p ... ks-1996517

In the UK, you need Photo ID to vote in Person. The following are accepted:
-> Driver's License (UK, Northern Ireland, EU Country, smattering of others)
-> Passport (UK, EU Country, smattering of others)
-> Variety of National ID Cards (PASS, Blue Badge, Defence Identity, National ID issued by EU+)
-> Electoral ID
-> A bus pass you get if you're old or disabled.
It does not matter if the ID is expired. If you don't have any of those, you can apply for electoral ID. To get electoral ID you need to have picture of yourself, a National Insurance number, your name, address and date of birth. You can apply online or by mail.
Picking Alabama (right now) arbitrarily, you need Photo ID to vote in person. The following are accepted:
-> Valid Driver's License (Not Expired or less than 60 days expired)
-> Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Digital Driver's license
-> Valid Non-Driver ID (Not Expired or less than 60 days expired)
-> Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Non-Driver ID
-> Valid Alabama Photo Voter ID
-> Valid State Issued ID (Alabama or Other State), examples given are prison and Jail release paperwork
-> Valid Federal ID
-> Valid US Passport
-> Valid Employee ID from Government (Federal, State, County, etc.)
-> Valid student or employee ID from college or university in State of Alabama
-> Valid Military ID
-> Valid Tribal ID
If you don't have any of those, you can apply for electoral ID. To get electoral ID, you need your name, address, date of birth, eye color, gender, height, weight, application date, photo identification document or non-photo identification document that contains date of birth, documentation showing date of birth, documentation showing you are an Alabama registered voter (can be electronically verified), documentation showing name and address matching voter registration record (can be electronically verified). The application must be presented in person at the local Board of Registrars, the Secretary of State's office, or at a mobile location to be provided.

And because voter fraud is practically unheard of the recent requirement for ID is pretty disgusting. If there is any fraud it'll be in postal votes where ID isn't required.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 11:03 pmYou've just described the UK exactly.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 8:38 pm https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-p ... ks-1996517

We do have occasional calls from various people to make things all less paper-based, based on, I can only assume, the opinion of "doing it all with paper and people counting things is not very modern is it should be modernised because that's apparently an article of faith." But if it ain't broken don't fix it.
But as pointed out all of that's probably rather easier in a smaller country.

I was denied my right to vote because I asked for a mail in ballot that never arrived.

Now he's saying that he'll end Birthright Citizenships. Not even being born on US soil will save you from getting deported.

I would call that an empty threat because of the 14th amendment but the current Supreme Court has made it clear that they don't give a damn what the Constitution says.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 4:44 am Now he's saying that he'll end Birthright Citizenships. One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars.
