Keep hoping we'd get past this, but for some reason people in state governments don't want to let it go.

If someone doesn't want to bake a cake for one of these weddings, should they be forced to?

Are you trying to draw parallels between same-sex marriage and child brides? Cuz that is the exact message I am getting.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Mon Jul 09, 2018 5:00 am If someone doesn't want to bake a cake for one of these weddings, should they be forced to?
Why do I keep hoping SOME things, like "kid-diddling is bad", will be uncontroversial on this forum?

I'd say it's more about the idea of having the freedom to choose by putting it in terms of something you would be more likely to agree with. Darth is hardly alone in not understanding that there is a mentality at work here which is seemingly unable to make the association that way, but will insist on making the association the way you have done. Which is to say that rather than seeing it as saying that people should be able to bow out of supporting something they see as immoral (and that different people will have different ideas of what is immoral), you see it as equivocating child marriage with same-sex marriage, and I have a feeling you would refuse to see it any other way.

I'm drawing parallels to people's reactions to them. What I'm saying is that other people should have the liberty to decide for themselves what is ethical and what is not, and not be forced to take part in actions they find ethically objectionable, within reason (I know that's slippery). Because I don't trust myself to be the arbiter of what is "really" right or wrong, and I don't trust anyone else to do that, either.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 09, 2018 11:48 pmAre you trying to draw parallels between same-sex marriage and child brides? Sometimes I wish I was like one of those lizards that squirt blood out of their eyes when threatened, because the human range of body language is insufficient.

Really trying to engage with your rhetoric...the reason some people refuse to bake cakes for gay people is because they perceive it as sinful according to their religion, or their personal conscience, or their instinctive revulsion.
The problem with child marriage is that it is against the laws and principles that we collectively agree to follow as a society. Things like "the age of consent", the rights of children, statutory rape laws, etc.
Do you see my problem?
Whether or not you want to phrase it that way, whether or not you think you are doign it, you ARE putting child brides and consenting adult same-sex couples on the same moral standing. You are saying that some 45-year-old patriarch who wants to make an 8-year-old- little girl his "wife" out at Creepy Concrete Bunker Ranch deserves the same amount of leeway from society as ME, an honest faggot who would like to have the option of marrying another male-identified person someday if I ever want to settle down and get hitched.
You are defending adults who take child brides.
If you'll excuse me I need to find something strong enough to dissolve paint and drink a few shots of it.

I'm not any of that, but I'm not sure you'll be able to see the difference. I am approaching this from a libertarian point of view and saying that people should be allowed to make their own decisions.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 3:35 am Really trying to engage with your rhetoric...the reason some people refuse to bake cakes for gay people is because they perceive it as sinful according to their religion, or their personal conscience, or their instinctive revulsion.

Let's say there's a planet of Snerks out there. Some Snerks like to glorg, and some Snerks think glorging is terrible. Some Snerks like to fnaffle, and some other Snerks think fnaffling is a horrible thing forbidden by the holy word of Glorft.
I'm saying Snerks should be able to decide whether to support glorging or fnaffling as individuals. If a Snerk has the liberty to decline to bake a wedding narp for glorging, they should have the liberty to decline to bake a wedding narp for fnaffling. I don't say that glorging or fnaffling are equivalent, nor am I saying anything about my own opinion on glorging or fnaffling, or the Snerks who indulge in either, both, or neither. Because who am I (or you, or anyone) to weigh in on something that cannot be objectively determined and is not a necessary part of Snerks' social functioning.
Re: Legalized Child Brides still a thing in the USA
Yeah, I totally laid out your problem with seeing it as different people having a different sense of morality, and that you would keep going back to the "how dare you compare child marriage to same-sex marriage!" Totally called that, didn't I? You just don't won't allow yourself to see that there isn't a comparison being made between them - they are simply two examples of deciding to exclude one's self from participating in what one considers an immoral act.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 3:35 am Really trying to engage with your rhetoric...the reason some people refuse to bake cakes for gay people is because they perceive it as sinful according to their religion, or their personal conscience, or their instinctive revulsion.

Re: Legalized Child Brides still a thing in the USA
Nobody even ASKED somebody to bake a frelling cake for the child bride weddings! You brought up that hypothetical so you could play devil's advocate and go "ha ha, silly man doesn't understand moral relativism!"
None of this answers the question of "how and why do we still have CHILD BRIDES in the year of somebody's lord 2018?
Alexa, how do I know if I'm having a stroke?
