He likes to imprison political opponents and he'd rather have a dead son than a gay one. If you are the praying type, please pray for Brazil.

And in Brazil, some poor young man was found with his nuts practically cut off.

JFC. What kind of violent savage does things like this? My Peruvian friend blames Bonsonaro winning. That it's a call to arms to right wing freak jobs who get off on sick and twisted urges. He's also panicking thinking this guy might invade other nations around there. That would mean Peru gets targeted. And I'm super scared for him. Worse yet, the major powers might get involved. We know the US will. France might have a claim according to him. Worse yet is if Russia and Putin decide to get involved like in the Cold War, and given recent rising tensions, this could just unlock a whole new can of worms given how it seems Putin is eager to destroy the West and conquer the world...

Wasn't there already a thread on this?

Why would he invade Peru? I could understand Venezuela, but why Peru? What's the Casus Belli? Are you sure this isn't just unwarranted fear mongering?

Bolsonaro is a nut job to make Trump jealous. I hope that there's still an election in 2022 so that Brazil can throw him out without needing a full-on revolution.

Hope so too. My friend had a panic attack and was practically suicidal upon learning this.

ABS and yes there was. I started it.

There were some pretty wild stories of what would happen if Trump won, and I remember people panicking the morning after the election. It turned out Trump wasn't going to shock all the gays or round up the muslims for concentration camps.

I'm not saying Jair Bolsonaro is my preferred Brazilian president, but I'm not ready to panic. If we can believe what he says, “This country belongs to all of us, Brazilians who were born here, and those who are Brazilian at heart. Brazil is a country of diverse opinions, colors and orientations. The law is for everyone,” then maybe some things he's said in the past won't be an indication of how he'll govern.

I do wonder if Venezuela's economic, food, and now suicide crises drove Brazil to the right.

Hard pass. You're "its not so bad!" rhetoric is empty and worthless. If you think it's not so bad, buy an airplane ticket to brazil and kiss somebody of the same gender in the street. I fucking dare you.

I'm not quite sure that's a proper test, Fuzzy. I'm a bit past spending thousands of dollars on a dare. Also, wouldn't that be sexual assault or something? If you can pay for the ticket and hotel stay and make it worth my time ($10,000) and arrange for consent, then we can talk.

Also, no tongue.

In any case, I didn't say "it's not so bad." I said I'm not going to panic and implied that there is some cause for optimism. And frankly, Fuzzy, you're bright enough to know the difference.

Maybe a tad, but from what I've seen, the real driver has been the unending corruption scandals that have plagued the PT. Bolsonaro was able to leverage popular rage at the mind-boggling amounts of money being stolen by the Worker's Party into electoral success, but like most populist politicians - he's a symptom, not a cause.

This assumption involves a willing partner.

I see nothing to be optimistic about. One of the lessons of past dictatorships is "When the dictator tells you who they are and what they are going to do, believe them."

He wants his political opponents in jail (or worse). He wants to kill the queers. He has a lot of fanboys ready to help him out. And already people are going out of their way to excuse and normalize him.

And this country has spent decades under dictatorship and only had democracy in the last 30 years.

Plus it's already the trans murder capital of South America and this man has said he would kill his own son if he thought the kid was gay.
