Intersex is somebody whose anatomy does not fit neatly within the male-female binary. Intersex people are about as rare/common as redheads.

I'm not correcting Fuzzy, but clarifying a few things.

I've seen an estimate of red-headedness in the U.S. as about 2 - 6%, but world-wide it's probably pretty rare (though it doesn't just pop up in white people). It hits about 10% in Ireland.

I think in the U.S., the frequency of intersex births that would be assigned surgery is much less than 1%, and have no reason to think that varies elsewhere. "Intersex" is a pretty broad category that could include, for example, chromosomal abnormalities that wouldn't have an obvious physiological consequence at birth. For example, Klinefelter syndrome (XXY sex chromosomes) are one of the more common intersex conditions, at about 0.1%, and the person who has it can go through their entire life not knowing they have it.
