That's a pretty dickish move. The kid should've been allowed to express their religious beliefs freely, it's not like they're hurting anybody by wearing ash on their head. What next, are we going to confiscate yarmulkes?

My opinion of Catholicism aside (despite being married to a practicing Catholic), I'm pretty strongly in favor of allowing anyone to quietly practice their religion and a little bit of ash on the forehead qualifies as quiet.
Kind of weird that the teacher instantly assumes that the student is lying (rather than herself being ignorant of another person's practices) and forced him to clean when it was hurting nobody even if he was lying. However her actions afterwards look to be genuinely apologetic, so I guess live and learn and move on.

While unfortunate, this appears to have been an honest mistake and everyone involved seems to acknowledge it as such and has learned their lesson.
So, all's well that ends well.
