Kathy Bates praised for losing weight from cancer

This.

This is why I have such a cynical eye to the entire weight loss culture and diet industry.
This is why I sneer when anyone tells me that weight loss has anything to do with "health".

People, especially women, get applauded for losing weight, whether it is through an eating disorder or through cancer or some other disease that is slowly but steadily killing them.

It says she lost weight from changing her diet after battles with cancer, not that she lost the weight from cancer. She also says that losing the weight has improved her life in many ways.

It is true that weighing less does not mean you're healthy, but fat people fare worse in many objective medical criteria.

I'm pretty much with you on the diet industry, though.

Preach on, but there is a significant correlation between weight and health.

I lost 100 pounds, and I'm damned proud of it. And no matter how hard you try to spin-doctor it, society just does not look well upon fat people. Not as potential dating partners. So it's imperative for me to lose weight, or I'll probably be alone the rest of my life.

Not to mention wrecking your joints, stressing your cardio-pulmonary system, and a shortened life span. But getting laid would be nice, too.

I'm not trying to spin doctor it. I know how bad society treats fat people, and that is exemplified by the way people who lose weight from disease and suffering are met with congratulations rather than concern.

You are trying to spin-doctor it, because you let your personal private interests interfere with an objective look onto the matter.

Objectively, fat for most people is a choice. That is why sympathy is light.

Yeah, again, look at me. 100 pounds in like half a year. If I can do that, who knows where I go next? Of course, it does get a lot harder from here. Know how bad it was? I couldn't walk down the block to the general store without panting and gasping and wheezing and seizing up once I got home. Not so anymore. That said, I think if you're overweight cuz of an eating disorder out of stress and depression, you deserve more sympathy than society is willing to give, tbh. That's where fat-shaming comes in sometimes, and it's awful.
