The good news is the USA is watering down their threat to veto the resolution on rape as a weapon of war.
but then
the US was still threatening to veto the watered-down version, because it includes language on victims’ support from family planning clinics. In recent months, the Trump administration has taken a hard line, refusing to agree to any UN documents that refer to sexual or reproductive health, on grounds that such language implies support for abortions. It has also opposed the use of the word “gender”, seeing it as a cover for liberal promotion of transgender rights.

Goddamn, Trump is embarrassing... we were seriously going to veto this? Bah! Despicable.

I do wonder how many of these people "pushing" this resolution as a good force of change would also likewise insist those doing the raping and getting off on something pure evil are "also victims" - of war trauma or some other bullshit like that. I HATE that. It's gotta stop.

Honestly. I think it's less about them seeing the soldiers as victims, more about them just straight-up hating women. A lot.

Man, the UN is pretty embarrassing, too, though. Like, a while back, some stuff came to light about peacekeepers raping children, and the UN actively covered it up. The only reason anyone knows about it is that there was a whistle-blower, who naturally was fired from his position in the UN.

Wasn't it already a weapon of war though? What exactly has the un changed? The article is a bit lacking in detail.

The reasons men (or women) do it in war varies, but it's not always to terrorize your enemy. Sometimes it's just seizing "spoils of war." The same as grabbing some useless trinket to take back home with you as a "war trophy." I don't see it as a "weapon of war" so much as a byproduct of what happens when you throw some really shitty human beings into a war, they'll exploit it for personal gain, like we do in peacetime through various other ways. We really ought to change the perception of this. It's hurtful to actual reasonable discussion and in many ways is perfectly representative of patriarchy and rape culture. Yes, I said that, I went there, and I firmly believe in it.

I don't agree either patriarchy or rape culture exists, but I won't argue.

I am assuming you mean, isn't it already against international law to use rape as a weapon of war?

Its 2019. I just kind of assumed that the UN would have agreed that rape is wrong by now. And in assuming that, this article made little sense to me.
