While the US dies of measles, Africa gets a Malaria-vaccine
youtu.be/qq9UtvtFpPA
A malaria-vaccine made it through the WHO test-cycles last week and is in the process of being rolled out in Malawi, followed by Kenia and Ghana later this year. All the countries' children under the age of 2 will be vaccinated. It's only effective against 40% of all infections, but it specifically targets the deadliest known variants.
Yeay science. Yeay vaccines.

There are people working on vaccines for HIV and ebola, too. I wonder how many people will refuse to take them?
There have already been people who refused HIV treatments for various reasons (like believing it couldn't be spread through sex, because sex was life-affirming... ) With predictable results.

I wonder just how instrumental the gates foundation was in this.

In the development of that vaccine? I have not done any research in that direction, but in general: If something got developed to help with fundamental problems in underdeveloped countries, be that education or medicinal help, you don't need to dig particularly deep to get to the Gates Foundation having it's hands in there. If not in the development, then in the distribution. Those are rich people who use their wealth in a manner that helps humanity.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 4:22 amI wonder just how instrumental the gates foundation was in this.

You can say what you want about capitalism and its shortcomings, but the gates fund has had its sights set on malaria for as long as time itself.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 11:39 amIn the development of that vaccine? Yes, there ARE good capitalists out there. There are just too FEW of them, these days.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 5:51 pmYou can say what you want about capitalism and its shortcomings, but the gates fund has had its sights set on malaria for as long as time itself.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 11:39 amIn the development of that vaccine? But back on topic, I'm glad we're getting somewhere with fighting malaria, even if it's proverbial baby steps. Now if only we could get people to take their damn shots!

Oh I know as good as anyone the shortcomings of capitalized markets. The gates fund is hardly enough to serve as a gotcha to socialists in itself.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2019 12:31 amYes, there ARE good capitalists out there. I was mainly just curious if this vaccine was related to their efforts that I've read about here and there in the last 15 years. Private initiatives like this tend to come across as undermining the organized effort to make government address these kind of market failures, so I thought I'd preconsider such attitudes before vaguely alluding to the hundreds of millions of dollars that the foundation retributed.
