Quantum Mechanics

Now, I'm not an expert on QM... I'm an expert of getting a headache from trying to understand it. Now it's gotten even weirder.
There has long been an assumption that a quantum leap is instantaneous and random. Now scientists have been able to tell when one is about to happen, and even interrupt it before it does.

I think this is Nobel Prize type stuff.
With the benefit of my ignorance, it sounds like there might be underlying variables changing. The Bell test eliminated local hidden variables, but maybe non-local variables? At this point I'm speculating way above my actual understanding, though.
