Yes, I am not making that up. And yes, that would not be the first time the US has wanted to acquire Greenland, which is home ruled but part of Denmark.

I have no idea how that would happen considering how countries are managed and run now, but I have heard worse ideas, it would likely be advantageous for the US; just that this is pie in the sky dreaming.

I would be very apprehensive if Greenland was bought as opposed to the residents having the choice via referendum.
Has a whiff of colonialism by capitalism as opposed to the gun.

I don't see buying countries to be viable thing to do. China knows this which is why they are using less direct way to do colonialism in modern world with they one road initiative.

Interesting how both articles seem to think, that it's about Thule Air Base. It is not. It's really about land-claims in the arctic waters and the exploitation of resources there.

If it happened, which it probably won't, I'm pretty sure Denmark would consult Greenland, and probably give Greenland a large chunk (if not all of) the funds generated by the sale (thus covering the subsidy).

There us a sad irony in the fact that climate change may make the place very rich thanks to its receding ice making the place easier to mine. The place is largely untapped.
Makes you wonder what the US and Canada will make of that in the future.

There's a lot of renewable energy there in the form of geothermal energy... But if I were Puerto Rico I'd be really annoyed if Greenland became the 51st state.

If Trump wants to buy Greenland then let him buy it. Don't see what the big deal is.

It's an inhabited country? Democratically governed.

It's both. Greenland as a whole would be a stone aircraft carrier situated astride the main westerly approaches to the North Atlantic, especially the Davis Strait, while also remains useful to project against Russia for the same reasons it the air base was built in the first place.
