Number of transpeople reversing their ops on the increase

This has been suspected for a long time but is now confirmed: the age of consent for sex-change surgery is too low and the help that vulnerable children receive when first coming forward with gender dysphoria is too low.

One interesting sentence of note here is that the people who are most likely to be seeking to reverse their ops are autistic. This implies to me that they were not transgendered at all, it was merely something that a group of people known for their fantasies and single-mindedness latched onto and were encouraged too readily by a society that is now slightly afraid to tell someone who claims to be transgendered that they actually are not.

And linked to this I feel is something that Chuck mentioned in his Star Trek Insurrection review about the fact that often depressed people decide that their problems are overwhelmingly one of location rather than the ten other things wrong with their lives... so they move state only to discover that they STILL have ten things wrong with their lives - only now they are in a strange place with no friends and family nearby.
I feel this is the same thing. Young people who are lonely, depressed, miserable, friendless, already vulnerable... who start to think that maybe if they were born differently then life would have been different. Maybe if they were the other sex (who seem to be having all the fun and attention that they aren't) then life would turn out better. And often, it doesn't, because not only do they not lose all of those previous problems, but now they have a whole load of new ones such as having to cope with bigotry and surgery costs.

How low was it, I dare to ask?

Don’t have the proper time to read that and find the inevitable half-truths, but one I can say without looking:

What percent of this percentage of “detransitioners” will seek transition again within 10 years? Experience suggests “high”.

It doesn't give those figures, the article is written from the prospective of a clinic who helps people detransition, and he gives the numbers as hundreds of people seeking the surgery. I can only assume the figure is correct otherwise Sky News (which is one of the major news outlets in Britain if not the world) is not doing its research properly.

The age of consent is 18 in Britain, but you can be put on the hormones and the blockers young. Far too young to truly know your own mind. The transman in the article is only 21 so he must have started the transition bang on when he could.
Looking back to when I was a kid, I couldn't have made that choice. I knew so little about the world and myself that pissing around with my body would have been a mistake. I simply do not believe that most kids or teens are smart enough to make permanent life-altering decisions.

I dunno, 18 seems fine to me. I thought it might have been, like 14 or lower...

Most things would be mid-twenties if I had my way. 18 year olds really are not that mature and yet are given the powers that only mature people should wield.

I guess. I still respect your feelings either way. :)

As a point of science, hormone *blockers* only do the thing they say: block hormones from affecting the body, and consequently delay puberty. So those by necessity should be done young, and reliably simply stopping them will let whatever gonads your rocking do their thing.

Now, doing that forever is not good for you, and after a few years you do need some sort of active hormones kicking around. So it’s likely that we may need to assess when we switch to proper hormone replacement, if the numbers or case studies are too dramatic. That I can’t assess without looking at the actual numbers.

I have to confess that I think CmdrKing has a point this time. Not necessarily an overriding point, but there could be some medical reason to administer hormone blockers when younger.

Maybe a compromise, with a one year waiting period? Or hold off for autistic people until they're 18?
