Apparently they made the edits back in 2014, before Trump was president. Though this was after Trump was claiming Obama was Kenyan, so the edits may have been political in that respect.

Does it really matter? I mean there are lot more serious issues than some celebrity being removed from some movie. Then again some people just seek things to be outraged over.

Sure, today it's just Trump in a movie. Tomorrow it's taking away your vote.

If the said it was simply for time, I think no one would really bat an eye. (the only reason he’s even there is he owned the hotel at the time)

To be clear CBC are saying it was for time, apparently in 2014 the started using a version for broadcast that had 8 minutes less footage so they could get more commercials in. A few seconds of that 8 minutes was Trump's appearance.

From the above link:
"As is often the case with feature films adapted for television, "Home Alone 2" was edited for time," CBC spokesperson Chuck Thompson said on Thursday in a statement. "The scene with Donald Trump was one of several that were cut from the movie as none of them were integral to the plot. These edits were done in 2014, when we first acquired the film and before Mr. Trump was elected president."

Makes sense. It's a joke cameo scene that serves no purpose in the film, so if I were editing for time, it's an easy choice.

The scene existed to feed Trump's ego (I guess). If I recall correctly, people who wanted to shoot films in his buildings needed to give him a role (however small) in order to receive permission.

I've heard a story about his scenes being omitted completely before release of a movie.
