Twitch decides to call women, ''womxn''.

This is some of the funniest shit that I have read in a LONG time. Twitch decided that it would rename the entire female gender (that's 50% of the human race by the by) as womxn in the hope of getting a few pats on the back from the trans community. Almost immediately, the trans groups pointed out that using a different word to describe them implies that transwomen are not women. Which is obvious to me but not to the geniuses at Twitch. No back-pats were had.

But get this: According to Twitch, the word ''woman'' is also sexist!! Apparently the ''man'' part in there has ''patriarchal roots''.

Can any LGBT people or feminists on this forum enlighten me as to whether Twitch is speaking for you here? Because I gotta say, this comes off as parody. Like, I could genuinely see myself making ''the word woman is sexist'' as an insult only for Twitch to come along and actually do it. I also wonder what it must be like for women to take 5,000 years to achieve equality with men (and that's not even the whole world by a long shot) only for wokeys to come along and try to rename you.

I should say in fairness that they have backtracked. But the fact it even happened in the first place is hilarious.

this is some "trending on twitter" bullshit. For context, the discourse that goes viral on twitter makes tumblr people go "Yeeks, glad I stay out of that nonsense."

That sort of word or alternates have been around for awhile. Womyn I think is the most common though.

From what I have seen, majority of feminists don't use that. Just like most don't have an issue with the word girl. But every once in awhile, the issue will be brought up.

I think the use of the term womxn has good intentions, but I think it suffers from not having an obvious way to pronounce it and it can be read as trans exclusionary by those that don't know those intentions. That reading stems from the similar term womyn is often used by TERFs and has a history of use in explicitly trans exclusionary events like the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival.

Truthfully, we're in that awkward period where all the proper terms and such haven't really solidified, so it doesn't surprise me that Twitch tried to come off progressive but went about in a misguided way.

That's fine. My brain used to get confused with the non-binary "they/them" thing when I first tried adjusting to that idea of pronouns, and now I have no issue of that. It's only grumpy old dorks that get upset over such things.

Yeah I have no idea how to pronounce womxn. And even I have heard womyn pronounced like woman or womin.

It's a misguided at attempt at being inclusive as part of Woman's history. The problem is that womxn is an obscure enough term that despite it being coined explicitly to include trans women and fem nonbinary people a lot of people in the progressive online circles I run in were wondering if it was a TERF thing like womyn.

It's similar to why my preferred term for Latina or Latino is Latine rather than Latinx as Latinx has no obvious pronunciation in Spanish as X makes a hard H sound in Spanish.

Lol at using a y to depart from the patriarchy.

I guess it makes sense how this whole thing played out.

This is too weird for me to understand.
