I wqould do that, but my bosses are actually decent folks and every other job available is either to qualifying or the same work but even harder for an extra 25¢. (For reference: I'm the main busboy/dishwasher/coffee brewer/janitor for the local Panera... That's ALL considered ONE position. I make $9.45.)

I will say that this might not work with small businesses. Paying let's say $15 an hour for even one employee might be beyond some. But that is small potatoes compared to Mega corporations like let's say Walmart or fucking Amazon.

Let's let not forget the how bad Amazon is to their employees.

The messed up part is the living wage bit. It has come up before, what is living wage in Kansas is homeless in California. And where I am a good chunk of earnings is getting between work and where you can afford to live. (No where near enough public transportation)

But the mom and pop stores I feel are as variable as states on living wage. A mom and pop place in my town does not bring in as much money as say a mom and pop coffee shop at the shore (tourist/vacation area).

California is increasing their minimum wage towards $15/hr by 2023 (2025 for workplaces with less than 25 employees). So good for them I guess. Minimum wages and differences of cost of living would seem to be an area where federalism would excel. But on the other hand:


Now some of the states that are at the $7.25 federal minimum wage probably have a reasonable enough CoL for that to work out OK for them. However, some of the states probably don't, especially PA and NH, both surrounded by higher than federal minimum wages. I think that some feel that the reason why minimum wages hasn't increased in these states is related to willful neglect by state legislatures, which is why they want to increase the federal minimum wage, cutting the knot.

From the looks of it, I feel like the effort for minimum wages reflects generally blue states that get darker the more I recognize them as being affluent in commerce or gdp/capita or gdp.

Is it just me? In my work in retail, I'd be wondering if maybe we should raise the minimum to $20 per hour to meet the wage stagnation. And yet others insist there'd be terrible economic consequences, and I'm not too sure about that. But I do know the big companies can probably afford it, as others noted.

The elites don't know jack about the common man. I don't like excessive work that drains my time on weekends or where I have to go into overtime, and I'm not the only one working in my family. My uncle has two jobs. It's brutal out there. At least biking to work cuts down on gas costs.

They know, but the policies of fiscal conservatism exist to keep the common man desperate, divided, and tired. A big thing we need to recognize is that this is capitalism working as intended, that it's supposed to funnel power to the top and crush those at the bottom.

According to my father, the consequences are 'you raise it a dollar, all the prices will go up a dollar and a nickel, you can't win.'

But he's a small govt type who thinks the fed's only good for the armed forces and anti-monopoly laws and that they should butt out on everything else.
