Skateboarding now an Olympic sport. Not a bad idea. Coming from someone who did skateboard in his youth, it really takes alot skill to make the eye popping tricks.

2021 Olympics
I got nothing to say here.
Re: 2021 Olympics
Skateboarding makes as much sense to me as other similar things like figure skating, from the perspective of the type of competition shown at the Olympics.

Re: 2021 Olympics
I was deeply disappointed by the skateboarding tbh. What I expected going in was Tony Hawk circa 2000 on one of those big ramps. Instead what we got was a couple of kids grinding down a pole like they do every Saturday outside my local supermarket.
Admittedly if I missed the bit where they were on the big ramp then my bad. But Tony Hawk back in the day would have destroyed any of them from what i saw.

Really, my key take-away from these Olympics is just one of deep pity for the people of Japan. Imagine spending billions of dollars and a decade of your life trying to set this up only for a pandemic to come along and completely destroy your plans.

They should have cancelled it. Now variants of the virus from every corner of the globe will get a chance to spread and mingle.
It was going to be a disaster for the locals to begin with. Since they decided to push on regardless, I hope the authorities who approved this suffer the same fate as the failing administration in Shin Godzilla.

Yeah.
I've never much cared about the olympics, or most sports in general, but i do enjoy seeing people performing at the peak of their potential, pushing the limits of human ability. So i've been seeing bits and pieces here and there. Caught a great boxing match last week, women's featherweight: Canadian lady just dominated this Croatian girl at least 3 inches taller and 12 years younger than herself.
And yet, it's always there at the back of my mind: "people are gonna die for this shit"
It''s just not worth it.

I honestly think they should have treated it like WW2. You call the whole thing off and it comes back in 2022 or 2024.

The extent of lockdowns to close down things like this and Disneyland were implemented so steadfast, consistently, and extensively in part because the outbreak was unprecedented and we didn't have any societal means of dealing with it. The variants pose increased virility, but they aren't really setting us back to square 1, and I think most societies aren't really poised to dive that deep into lockdown procedures again.

The nightmare scenario is a variant that can get around the vaccine. It is a very real possibility. The upside is that we know so much more about the vaccine now that hopefully we could get one out quickly; but deployment is always the limiting factor.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 4:10 pm The extent of lockdowns to close down things like this and Disneyland were implemented so steadfast, consistently, and extensively in part because the outbreak was unprecedented and we didn't have any societal means of dealing with it. Re: 2021 Olympics
I keep forgetting the Olympics are happening.
I have issues with the Olympics in concept to start with, but in the wake of the plague and with the increasing awareness the public seems to have of impending global climate change... It all seems intensely silly to give a shit about who runs the fastest.
Your foot speed really won't matter when the glaciers go Jokulhaups or all the fields turns to dust bowls.
