"Greenpeace Philippines strongly denounced the approval of genetically modified 'Golden Rice' (GR) for commercial propagation and called on Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar to reverse the decision and represent the interests of Filipino farmers and consumers," reads the Greenpeace press release.

"...in 2016, a group of 100 Nobel Laureates issued an open letter to Greenpeace demanding that the anti-technology activist group "cease and desist in its campaign against Golden Rice specifically, and crops and foods improved through biotechnology in general." The laureates pointed out that "scientific and regulatory agencies around the world have repeatedly and consistently found crops and foods improved through biotechnology to be as safe as, if not safer than those derived from any other method of production. There has never been a single confirmed case of a negative health outcome for humans or animals from their consumption. Their environmental impacts have been shown repeatedly to be less damaging to the environment, and a boon to global biodiversity."

The laureates' letter ended:

WE CALL UPON GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD to reject Greenpeace's campaign against Golden Rice specifically, and crops and foods improved through biotechnology in general; and to do everything in their power to oppose Greenpeace's actions and accelerate the access of farmers to all the tools of modern biology, especially seeds improved through biotechnology. Opposition based on emotion and dogma contradicted by data must be stopped.

Greenpeace's deeply unreasonable stance against Golden Rice has been frustrating for years. Thankfully efforts have gone ahead without them, and lives are already being saved.

Yep. GMO are a boon to humanity and I think will be integral in preventing the coming end of the world. Patents of them are bane to humanity.

Although as certain kinds of allergies become more common, I do think it's important to clearly label GMOs so folks can properly know where proteins they may have reactions to might have been added. Otherwise Monsanto delenda est and bring on the science food.

No, because the highlighted part is not true.

That's my main-concern with GMOs. I'm not opposed on a moral-level, but a simple survival one. I've got a number of allergies that are each capable of killing me within minutes and the way how allergies are still kinda poorly understood and how easily modifications can spread over to non-genegineered organisms (and the clear non-chalance and disregarding attitude displayed by all the relevant players), makes me wonder whether this brave new world is a world that allows me to live in the first place. I may actually have to end up wondering, whether a noodle in a soup that never was a problem for me, can actually kill me on another day, just because someone somewhere along the line of the making of the noodle, decided that some camomilla or kiwi proteins are a nice addition and advantageous.

I'm not really all that convinced by the usefulness of GMOs, they strike me as trying to cure the symptoms rather than the disease.
