Shinzo Abe: Killing of Japan's ex-PM described as 'barbaric'

The killer is an ex-JMSDF-member and McGyvered a sort of pipe gun in order to shoot and kill Abe. The reasons for which are rather unclear, as all he said so far was, that he was disillusioned with his policies. Abe resigned from his ministerial post two years ago, but remained a strong grey eminence.

Do you know the amazing thing about Japan? It has a population of 125 million and yet there were only 32 gun deaths in 2020. It just goes to show that strict gun control as well as a CULTURE that doesn't fetishize guns is demonstrably better than a country with the exact opposite of that. This is probably why the shooter even managed to get close to Abe in the first place; his security simply was not expecting such an attack assuming he had any security at all.

Yeah but when was the last time one of our presidents was shot by our own people? It's been quite a while.

Um...
Since 1865, there have been attempts on the lives of one of every four Presidents and the successful assassination of one of every five. During the last three decades, three attacks were made.
And that is not counting ex-presidents and president-elects...

That gun deaths stat for the US is barely above half the real number, my guess is they're not counting suicides.

Well a suicide isn't really violent the same way an assassination is.

It has a radically different culture and ethnic make-up. In fact, it's almost completely uniform, especially given how virulently racially bigoted Japan as a nation is towards its very few ethnic minorities. It persecuted and oppressed the Ainu to the point that their native language is almost completely dead and scholars are scrambling to document what remains before the last speakers die. It has been illegal to speak that language in public for generations.

Japan also has strict weapons restrictions that were imposed upon it by the US when it was occupied after WWII.

If you're going to use a nation as an argument in favor of gun control, I suggest you pick another. You're doing your position no favors by trying to cite Japan.

Yeah, Canada is a better example. Closer culturally AND geographically and... Oh, would you look at the chart? They're doing something right.

Aren't defense sprays, like pepper spray and mace, illegal in Canada?

Ronald Reagen in 1981. So 41 years. You could suppose the irregularity of the 20th century assassination attempts is due to increased training and presence of the Secret Service.

Obviously the last successful one for a president was JFK which is over 60 years ago now.
