A bad week for Marvel

Post by clearspira »

https://www.cbr.com/disney-fires-marvel ... erlmutter/

Disney has just fired Ike Perlmutter, the boss of Marvel. You may remember him as one of the ''stars'' of Chuck's comic's history series on the collapse of the house of ideas.

This on the heels of the firing of Victoria Alonso and facing a possible lawsuit from her.

And the did he/didn't he domestic abuse charges against Jonathan Majors AKA Kang.

Combine this with Iger admitting the commercial failure of Phase 4...

And its looking pretty bad over there right now. Sink or swim time.

Good riddance.

Rich and powerful guy at or near the top? It's always the same. Probably too many connections, favors, and power to be easily swept aside. It's a minor miracle when it does happen.

If I understand the specifics correctly, when Disney bought Marvel originally, Perlmutter was paid in enough shares to appoint himself to the board at Disney, which made him functionally immune to being fired directly. So Disney settled for slowly moving parts of marvel into new divisions until it was only the comics, then finally seized this excuse to dissolve the division he was part of entirely.

His wiki said that he never got a board position out of it. And, that except for Feigi, Marvel as a distinct entity itself has mostly been dissolved from Disney.

I'm sure Marvel will be fine even if it might not be all sunshine and roses at an individual level. They're simply still doing too well to the point of basically being bullet proof. Appropriate I guess for a superhero company.

A couple of serious financial flops, now that's what could cause some actual damage, but even Antman 3 isn't doing that badly so I don't think we're going to see it happen until say by the time of the Thunderbolts at the very earliest.

Might get worse.

The reports I am hearing about the The Marvels might be of concern. Brie Larson acting up on set, thinking she might or will not be back after all this. That anything involving her might turn off alot of Marvel fans etc.
I got nothing to say here.

I think the bigger problem is that Disney is treating the Marvel property as though it were one of the old-school serials, without the structure or context that made people willing to go to see serials in the first place.

They're doing the same with Star Wars: a constant flood of products which people are tolerating because they like the brand instead of because they actually want new product.

People are still treating this as if it’s one tent-pole blockbuster or a network TV show with 26 episodes of season.

The issue with streaming is beyond that. Also, marvel isn’t going to go under from one failed tent pole movie. Looking at one movie’s performance alone doesn’t give any indication for the whole phase.
