Babu Frik and General Pryde: Why Was Everyone Hyping These Characters Up?

Post by Winter »

So, I didn't see Rise of Skywalker when it came out and, in fact, didn't see it until a year after it was released in theaters. But I did read up on the film, watched reviews for it, positive, negative and neutral ones, mockery reviews, reviews that blamed the fans, reviews that blamed the creators and everything in-between. The general concisest of the film was overall poor, with many feeling it was the worst in the series and even the most positive admitted that the film had it's issues but there where a few things that fans agreed on and that was Babu Frik and General Pryde were some of the best parts of the film.

Babu Frik was said to be one of the funniest characters in the series and was just a delight to watch and managed to have so much character in his small amount of screen time while Pryde was seen as a MASSIVE step up from Hux with many saying that he showed how dangerous the First Order could be by being competent and intimidating. So, when I went to watch the film in preperation for my Thrawn Trilogy vs TDST comparison I wasn't really hyped for either of these characters but I was intrigued to see what made these two so popular and... I didn't get.

I mean, all Babu does is speak in an alien language and goes "Hey-heeeeyyyy" once or twice and Pryde... Um, he figured out that Hux was the spy and then got command of the Star Destroyer Fleet and then, couldn't tell which direction up was and failed to deal with the horse on his ship... I mean, neither of them are really bad but, I didn't see why they got so popular at the time.

Maybe it's just me, what do you think of Babu Frik and General Pryde, are these characters you found to be great or do you even remember them? Let me know. :)

Babu Frik was that oddball 'cute' funny alien. That was it.
I got nothing to say here.

Reading this, I'm realizing just how little I actually remember from that movie. I have no idea who/what the hell you are talking about.

Because the ST was such a clusterfuck that JJ and LucasFilm were desperate to salvage the final film in the trilogy in any way possible, even going as far to "somehow" bring back Palpatine. So they decided to replace Hux with Pryde, because when you wasted two movies turning a seemingly semi-serious character into a complete joke that no one can ever take seriously again, your only course of action is to replace him with a more serious character.

Pryde gets a popularity boost as the only remotely competent and professional named villain in the trilogy. In any other Star Wars property he'd be Unnamed Imperial Officer #3.
