JFF: How I Would Start a Star Trek Series

Post by Winter »

Me personally, I would start the series in a more unusually way. Nothing bizarre or out of the ordinary but not something you'd normally see in Trek yet something that does fit within the universe. And that starting point would be based on a personal favorite movie of mine, Down Periscope.

For those who haven't heard of the film or have heard of it but have yet to see it, Down Periscope is a comedy movie that is about a recently promoted Submarine Captain who is put in charge of an obsolete World War II-era diesel submarine in a War Game to see if one could pose a threat to the United States Navy. The film, according to member of the US Navy have praised the film for it's accurate portal of the Navy and how such a War Game would play out but and, IMO, is actually pretty funny, especially if you happen to be related to someone who works or worked in the Navy (Hi Dad!!! :D). However, I think this would be a great idea for a first season of Star Trek.

A low stakes journey that introduces us to the main cast by using one of the classic Star Trek Ships from the original series or even from Enterprise (with the sets designed to look like it did in those shows and show Star Fleet performing a War Game to test their defenses. The Focus being mainly on just the interaction of the crew that has a self contained story as we see them out smart more modern Star Fleet ships while still dealing with the usual Trek hi-jinks but never anything out of the ordinary for Trek.

The season ends with the crew succeeding in their task proving that they are up to the task of taking command of a more modern ship and going on a more traditional Trek Adventure. The Purpose of using the older ship would serve 3 purposes, the first of which being that it gives long time fans of the series a chance to see a major part of Trek Lore in action and not only taking on newer ships but WINNING a War Game which ties into the second point of using this ship which is to show the clever tactics and strategies of the crew as they use the older to tech to their advantages. The third purpose would be to show the limitations of Star Fleet and show as powerful as it is it's not invincible as even with the best tech they lost to an older class and yet also ties into one of the messages of Trek, moving forward but learn from the past.

So, what do you think. :)

Pretty much what I wanted from The Orville and gradually lost.

And what I got from Lower Decks once they ditched the Rick and Morty elements.
