Honestly this looks like blatantly self-referential nonsense made purely for fanservice to people who saw the original as children and I am probably going to be into it to an embarrassing degree.
Actually this is lifted from the sequel novel which also had the sisters using updated versions of the "Brooms" they had in the original. And it makes sense, this seems to be taking place early in the film and so they don't have any brooms. Honestly, as self-referential humor goes this isn't that bad ESPECIALLY when compared to the Live-Action Disney Remakes (Seriously Pinocchio, a Chris "Pine" joke) and at least serves the plot as the sisters need brooms to get around for plot purposes.

But yeah, this is really on the nose and I kinda love it.

I do have one complaint: the elder witch with Tim Curry energy from the prolog needed about 10,000% more screen time.
