This Kirk is much more fair minded than Pine and really reminds me more of a Kirk without softened eyes.

Watching the Abrams movies recently, and I actually appreciate their honesty as an action franchise. If you depend on the diplomatic themes surrounding the end of the Cold War projects then it comes off sophomoric, but it still works as a darker AU to the original series' adventure themes and has its own distinctive lore/narrative corner. It's a separate timeline that has been appropriated somewhat by both DC and Marvel multiverses imo.
