So... I got Prime for Christmas. And my first act was to binge Lower Decks season 1. I'm starting season 2 now.
God damn me, its actually pretty good.
And it kind of bothers me that it is. Because I don't want to like it - I admit it. I don't. But in some ways it is more ''Star Trek'' than anything since ENT and actually in many ways less canon breaking in comparison to DISCO season 1 or *shudder* PIC. It saddens me that this Pickle Rick inspired show has more traditional Trek in it than the whole of Discovery combined. But there is love for the property here that shines through I have to accept it.
Such is the state of Trek today, I guess.
I sincerely doubt that i will be able to overcome my gag reflex long enough to give PIC or DISCO another chance though. Especially as PIC is meant to be a SEQUEL to this - how these two can be set in the same universe a mere ten or so years apart is nonsense.
I waited until season 3 came out before I started to watch myself. It was a combination of how much I didn't like Season 1 of Discovery and it's animation style. Animation being the same reason why I held off watching Rick and Morty for so long. But it was Lower Decks that made me watch that show too.
To me, this is a show for fans. That's why do much fan service is made even if it made no sense in context of the scene. Some treat it like Lite-Canon because of how the show is, others like Steve Shivers treats is like full on cannon, or a serious Trek show.
Yeah the fan service sometimes goes overboard but like I said, it's really a shoe for fans of old Trek.
I like this show but honestly the episode where the humor worked best was the Strange New Worlds crossover where the Enterprise crew were there to act as straight man. Especially the "got me doing it" gag when they start geeking out about Archer's Enterprise exactly like Boimler has been theirs.
...for space is wide, and good friends are too few.

It's insidious, like rootbeer.

Steve Shives treats is like full on cannon
That's a bit incorrect; Shives doesn't believe that canon or continuity are things that are important in Trek, so I don't think he treats it as canon. It's more accurate to say it doesn't matter to him whether it fits or not, and he seems quite happy to accept it regardless.

That episode did a very good job in making basically cartoons into real life characters and still keep their humor in it. Like Pike's crew wondering why those 24th century Stargleet officers are acting so weird.
