Re: Suicide Squad may be a fantastic bomb
So a good friend of mine had asked me a question. "How would you fix SS?"
Well, not being a game director, I can't fix gameplay. I can, however, fix the story. So, please go with me in this, and I will not be writing a 200,000 word script so really bare with me. The first thing to change, is the title. The game should not be called Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Instead call it Suicide Squad: Task Force Justice. The game's story would be simple. Metropolis has been invaded by a deadly threat, one called Despero. Amanda Waller calls in the Squad to do a very important job. Hide the fact that ARGUS CALLED in Despero and alerted him to Earth. If they cannot, they will be executed. Thus, the five members of the squad, King Shark, Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Tattooed Man, and Captain Boomerang head to Metropolis to destroy all records of ARGUS collaborating with Despero for alien weapons that he used to track Earth's location. But, as they are now in Metropolis, they battle Despero's cultists and meet the Justice League. To not be arrested, they explain they're a task force sent by Amanda Waller... to AID the League in battling them. While the League is wary, they have no time to battle the villains AND Despero, and so allow them in as long as they PROVE they are.
Now this forces the squad to be wary of slipping and getting Amanda to blow their heads off. Each one of the members of the Squad have some personal beef with each hero. Bloodsport hates Superman, Harley hates Batman, King Shark hates Wonder Woman, Tattooed Man hates Green Lantern, and Captain Boomerang LOATHES Flash. But, as they are forced to work with the League and save people and battle Despero, the squad... are changed by the League. They start wondering if they are just DOOMED to be losers and puppets and bad guys. Each one of them changed. Harley realizing she is not just the sidekick and lover to a monster, King Shark is more a person than a rabid beast, Tattooed Man learning he can be a good man and not just a gang banger, Bloodsport in what it means to be a man, and Captain Boomerang finding empathy, a concept beaten out of him. At the end, as the League is captured, the SS finally decide to go against orders from Waller and get their nano bots removed to save the League, knowing that the world needs a Justice League... a group they wanted DEAD when they first met them. Because the League, even wary and disliking the Squad... treated them as humans and good people when they SHOWED they had the potential. A potential denied to them until now.
I have more but best to end it with that for now.

Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

I actually thought Skill Up's review showed how the title could maybe have worked. The main change he mentioned is you've got to show the real heroes more and not just the mind controlled evil jerk versions. You get like two lines from Barry thanks to the lasoo but it's no where enough to make you care.

I'm happy with the Suicide Squad beating a mind controlled Justice League.
They just shouldn't kill them or treat them like monsters.
They should also need more than just guns.

Yeah. There's really only one thing that's fundamentally flawed about the game: It's gameplay. There's just too much of a disconnect between the gameplay and the story/setting. Gameplay-wise, everything's a bullet-sponge and all our (even completely unpowered characters) can essentially fly and tank like Superman. Story-wise, everything should go down relatively fast or really not at all (and Superman should've died to Wonder Woman's final attack already.)CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 5:55 pm I'm happy with the Suicide Squad beating a mind controlled Justice League.

Killing the mind-controlled JL? I feel that's right in the ballpark for Task Force X. Waller doesn't half-ass it, she goes for the throat. That's how it should be.
Oh and the game has got some really great acting and character moments going on:
Or how utterly ineffectual Batman becomes if he can't trick, stealth or flat out beat you into submission, if you see right through his psychological bullshit. The obsidian scalpel, blunted by a sober mind. Harley Quinn's sober mind no less.*both bemused and flabberghasted* "One of the world's greatest heroes, snuffed out by... this..."
*confident and exhilarated "M-hm. And you're next, asshole."
*dripping smugness* "Sure. Sure."
And there're so many more moments like this. This game is great, if it weren't for the gameplay.

I don't mean in-universe. I'm saying as a game design point.Killing the mind-controlled JL? I feel that's right in the ballpark for Task Force X. Waller doesn't half-ass it, she goes for the throat. That's how it should be.
I mean, Waller absolutely would, and the Rocksteady verse will get conquered by Darkseid next week.

With games like this, Darkseid can have Arkham verse at this point.

I agree with you in so far, as that it should've taken more than just guns to take down Superman and co. And there are traces of it left in the game, which is all the more perplexing. Gold Kryptonite. Boomering getting the Speed-Force Canceller. Harley figuring out to out-fear-gas Fear-Gas-Batman (who's a far cry from a rebirthed post Arkham Knight Batman). But it just doesn't get played straight and always leads into the next idiotic bullet-sponge segment.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Sun Mar 03, 2024 1:59 pmI don't mean in-universe. Oh and as for displaying the mind-controlled JLers as monsters... They are... Or rather, would be just that. Evil Superman is one of the most terrifying things I can imagine. Murderous Batman is flat out Warhammer 40k material, except it gets called "Conrad Kurze" there. And Flash being a twat? Well, he kinda is, except in a playful manner if he's on good terms. Reverse that and... yeah. Perfect characterization imo. In short: Evil JL would be and should be monsters.
And as for this playing in the Arkham Verse: No. Just no. I refuse that. The Arkham Knight Batman wouldn't come back as this. He deliberately killed the Bruce Wayne persona to keep doing what he wants to do and that's scare the living hell out of people doing evil things. He just would not come back as someone narrating about his tragic past in a public museum...
