In Ezri's defense her character is one of the best depictions of "my entire self-image is suddenly a shattered ruin, I don't know who I am, and I have to build an identity from scratch while desperately clinging to any scrap of continuity with my life to this point" that I've seen on TV.

On the rom part of things... I actually assumed (before Lower Decks proved me wrong) that Rom was gonna be a victim of a Ponzi scheme. The ferengi PRETENDED they had all these reforms, repaid old debts, ran campaign deals, Rom takes control... than BOOM, they swindle DOZENS of races who set up new deals, and RUN from Feringinar and known Alpha Quadrant space, using a device those weirdos from Voyager provided when they returned to Alpha Quadrant space to travel to the Delta Quadrant. They're now ultra rich, a lot more powerful, and have no enemies left. Thankfully, Rom and Leeta return to Federation space and Rom is made chief engineer of a space station as Leeta now works on the job she always wanted... grief councilor. She had to do a LOT of it for Rom on the way back to Federation space as the Nausicans were chasing after them trying to eat Rom's legs.
Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

She’s great on paper and delivery. My only issue is that the premise of Dax taking the form of someone completely untrained and unexpecting inadvertently illustrated just what’s going on between the host and the symbiotic, whereas before it had mystique.
..What mirror universe?
