Weirdly I have the idea for a Lower Decks episode that kind of makes fun of the old TOS 'battles' and tests where the Cerritos is trapped by cosmic beings who divide the crew into four groups, observers, fighters, thinkers, and leaders. Mariner and Tendi are fighters, thinkers are Rutherford and T'Lyn, and Boimler in leader. When informed that NONE of them are in danger, they can leave whenever, and the prizes are pretty decent fun stuff, the crew plays along... also cause they're not sure if the aliens will take no for an answer. It's basically a fun test of what the crew is like as they compete against each other and see how far the lower deckers have come after years of working hard and compete against the upper brass of the Cerritos in fun matches that are designed to be fair. Kind of a real light hearted episode that while lacking in jokes (I did have the idea of Boimler and a guy doing a competition where they must decide who gets the serum to cure Boimler's dad or the guys wife, Boimler accepts his dads words to give it to the guy, and Boimler is declared the winner cause he worried about everyone but chose the life of a mother of a special needs kid over his dad, and the guy lost for not even caring about Boimler's dad. When dejected, the wife says she never thought he'd win, the guy complains about the aliens kicking him down, and they make clear she said that cause that's what she would have said at that very moment which makes him feel worse), it would more than make up for character growth and progress. Plus a fun fight between Mariner and Ransom where Mariner realizes she can't beat Ransom in a straight fight and can barely cheat, so instead, she goes into his ego and defeats him because he fell for the most classic starfleet trap of all... monolouging during a fight.
Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

A lot of this probably can be blamed on Roddenberry. An interesting chap, being a USAF man he didn't seem to know much about the Navy.

For example, he seemed to think that ''Commodore'' was still a navy rank even though according to Wiki the last two were in the 1880s and was even then only ever awarded in wartime.
Depends where you look. My dad's last job in the Royal Navy was as a commodore, although it went with the particular job rather than being a substansive rank (although I believe that's changed now). That might be irrelevant since Trek is understandably more USA-influenced, although the original idea was "Hornblower in space."

Personally I think reviving the title commodore makes more sense than rear admiral lower (I have heard half and decks) and rear admiral upper. Just go commodore, rear admiral, vice admiral, admiral.
