With my recent obsession with Dragon Ball (sorry about that) I've been checking out a lot of the series (mostly Dragon Ball Z Abridged) and I'm currently checking out the Goku Black Saga aka the Future Trunks Saga and I was thinking, should Future Trunks had his own spinoff series?
Future Trunks is a hugely popular character in the DB fandom, much more so then his main timeline counterpart and fans have always found his story to be a very compelling one and the future he comes from is one of the more interesting ones IMO. It's clear that Toriyama thought the same since he eventually brought F Trunks back in a overall good Saga with one of more surprisingly popular villains in Goku Black, though most agree that the ending of that saga is... not really that popular with pretty much anyone and that's all I'm going to say on that.
But it got me think, should Future Trunks have his own spinoff series?
One major advantage about the Future Trunks Universe is that there's honestly a lot that can be done with the story as, aside from the Buu saga there's not a whole lot of the stories from the main timeline that can be told, Beerus would still be asleep as it's unlikely a Saiyan God would awaken to challenge him, Frieza would likely remain dead because there are no Earth Dragon Balls and no one knows where New Namek is. There's also the question of Broly, if he would be found and would he end up on Earth and if so as Trunks enemy or ally.
There's also the fact that, as I just pointed out, there are no Dragon Balls, on Earth at least, so this is a world where Death might just stick.
Honestly, I would like to see a spinoff series of Future Trunks that addresses all these point, one where Trunks did meet Broly and either fought him or allied with him, have a story where they do go looking for New Namek to try and use the damn Dragon Balls. See Future Trunks, Bulma and Mai take on Buu and how they stop him from returning.
There really is so much that can be done with this story and would be interesting to see it unfold instead of just reducing it to a single saga that includes the Universe 7 characters.
Should There Have Been a Trunks Spinoff?
Re: Should There Have Been a Trunks Spinoff?
I am OK with the Dragonball stuff.
IMO, it should have been left as is. Movie? Sure but not a spinoff.
Outside implications of somehow his timeline is tied to the main one which causes headaches in itself, it's self contained. He comes back to the past to the main timeline, saves Goku. Causes a shift where there is three more Androids. Cell doesn't count, as in both the one where our Perfect Cell came from where he killed that Trunks, he also appeared in our Future Trunks as well.
Then he stays trains with Vegeta, gains alot of power. Enough to take on a suppressed Perfect Cell but more than enough to take on Androids 17 and 18 plus a Imperfect Cell.
End of the story for him.
Super made a mistake in bringing him back. Never liked that saga. The idea of a god like Zamasu going rogue is. Nevermind the saga being a mess with the worse ending in a of Dragonball, but it just felt like a rehash of the same future apocalyptic future he had back in DBZ.
I mean great we saw what he did during the Buu Saga part of his future (which still would have been his past). So that ends that decades long debate about Buu.
I think Trunks should have been left to help rebuild his world. Be their protector and that is it.
Again, a movie? Sure. Post Cell Games movie. Even how Trunks worked with the Supreme Kai to prevent Buu from hatching would have been cool. Could have been done with Super. But that time is past.

I got nothing to say here.
