Hypothetical Question: You Have Bought BioWare and all it's IPs, What do you do with it?

Post by Winter »

BioWare has, obviously, been on my mind as of late and I got a lot of my Veilguard Remake post. Just about all of us agree BioWare is pretty much dead with the only chance it has being if Mass Effect 5 manages to pull off miracle.

But what if there was a way to save BioWare. What if we somehow became rich and were able to buy the company from EA along with all it's IPs. We have the money and resources to do with this series as we see fit. What would you do?

As discussed before I would focus first on remasters of the series. Just remaster all the games the company has. Update the graphics, restore as much cut content as I can and make a few minor changes and quality of life improvements. Even if we only focus on Mass Effect and Dragon Age that's still gives us 8 games to work with and generally speaking Remasters are easier to put out then new content and insure a profit.

But as for the games, I would allow ME5 more breathing room, give the team working all the resources they needed to get it done.

As I've also talked about before I would make a few remakes as well. Mass Effect 3, Andromeda, Anthem, Jade Empire, Dragon Age II and Dragon Age IV. KOTOR is already getting one and I doubt I'll be able to access that but if possible I would follow stryke and Nealithi idea and make a remaster of The Old Republic and rework it into a single player game.

The reason for all these remasters and remakes is for a couple of reasons, one it insures a profit will be made, two it insures fans get what they want games they love that have been improved while games that are more mixed get a second chance.

Another reason is that this will buy time for teams working on new games, either continuations of ME or DA or whole new series. This also builds up hype for upcoming games in the existing series which would hopefully get fans interest in said series again.

The new entries in older games need a shot in the arm and fans love the older games so why not kill two birds with one stone.

While Mass Effect already has a remaster there's honestly a lot of room for improvement. Personally I'm still bitter about them not restoring the same sex romances. They've claimed it was because it was to much work to restore but I frankly I call BS because fans have been able to restore those romances and while some lines are missing would it really be that hard to get Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer back to re-record the few lines that are missing. Yeah it might sound weird but these are two talented voice actors, surely it wouldn't be that hard for them to just redo older lines.

So mostly the remasters and remakes would be done to buy time for the others games to be fleshed out and I would make sure to create a healthy working environment to insure a better product.

I do not get that. How do you lose the voice lines when you have access to the original game? Couldn't you just get a copy of the first version and pull the lines?

It's complicated, they kinda of do and kinda don't, copyright laws are confusing and make no sense.

Again, it can be complicated. In the games many of the original audio is still there, like the romances with Jack and Miranda if you're FemShep are still intact but a some of the lines with the FemShep/Tali romance is missing. I think the same thing is happened with Thane and Jacob but I'm not 100% sure on that.

This is just something that happens, things get lost like with Jurassic Part: The Lost World's deleted scenes, there was a fire at the place where the footage was being held and a lot of the footage was lost and only a little bit of i survived.

But with a game like Mass Effect and Dragon Age these would be less of an issue since you can just re-record the dialogue as needed. Most of the lines between with the characters is completely unaltered from the the straight romances and most of those lines would need a simple edit and you just need Hale and Meer to record, at best, 30 or 40 minutes of dialogue. Again it might sound weird given they've aged a bit but they could pull it off.

Don't underestimate the influence of sound-mixing. You have a pretty darn good chance for re-recorded lines to sound very different, no matter the effort. There goes a lot of work in every detail of a game or a movie.

No I don't mean the originals in some vault. I mean copies of the games exist with those sound files. Can't they just be copied back? This isn't some odd Trek thing where one file is moved constantly and not duplicated.

You never know.

Silent Hill lost all of its original files.

Same with the original Babylon Five.

Again, this is kinda hard to buy when fans using mods have been able to restore lost content, including cut missions, dialogue, romances and DLCs.

Again if fans on a shoes string budget can do this surely BioWare could do the same. And the few lines that are missing could be added in later. It would be hard but it could be done.
